MovingtoPortland,OregonandfindingworkinfoodserviceiseasyforPaulandRamona.Astrugglingmusicianwithoutbandmates,Paulbecomesintrovertedandmoody.Ramona’sfriendfromcollegeintroduceshertoanewsocialcircleandshegoesoutwhilePaulstayshome.WhenRamonaconfrontsturningthirty,it’stimetogrowbeyondoldroutinesandherrelationshipwithPaulcomestoahead.PaulandRamona,ayoungcoupleinneedofachange,movetoPortland,OregonfromtheirhometownofBoise.Uponarriving,theysubletanapartmentandbegintofamiliarizethemselveswiththecity.Whilefindingworkiseasy(Ramonabeginswaitressing,whilePaulgetsajobatacoffeeshop),changeisdifficult.Theirlifeinthisnewcityseemstobeonrepeat.Whentheircarbreaksdownandatandembicyclebecomestheirprimarymeansoftransportation,Ramonarefusestoride.Astrugglingmusician,Paul,spendsmostofhistimeathome,steadilybecomingintrovertedandmoody,whileRamona,attheinsistenceofaco-worker,isthrustintoanewsocialcircle,whereshebeginsanaffairwithaco-worker.RamonaandPaul’srelationshipimplodesaftersheconfessesandintheensuingconflict,sheimpulsivelyleavestostaywithafriend.Paul,desperatetoworkthroughthepainofthesplit,befriendsaquirkybaristanamedAli.Thisfriendshipgiveshimachancetobegintohealandinspireshimtofocusonexpressionthroughhismusic.
